The Barnes Philadelphia to Open May 19

The Barnes Foundation, finally opening this week after years of planning, a good bit of controversy, and the movement of a much-lauded art collection, is available to host private events three nights per week. In addition, group tour options are available, which may even be accompanied by private introduction and coffee service. Truckeroo Food Truck Festival Returns

Truckeroo, a monthly festival which runs from May through September, showcases Washington, DC’s most popular new craze: the Food Truck. Featuring 20 food trucks, live music, cold drinks and games, the festival takes place one Friday each month at Half St and M St SE across from the Navy Yard Metro Station. Guests can try a variety of cuisines, including fare from DC Empanadas, Curbside Cupcakes, DC Slices and the Red Hook Lobster Truck. Maynard Jackson International Terminal

The team from GEP Atlanta flew by the Maynard Jackson International Terminal at the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport on opening day. The latest $1.4 billion addition to the world’s busiest airport boasts a sleek, modern design with streamline blue lines glowing from ceiling panels and floor to ceiling windows facing the tarmac. The terminal adds 12 gates to the 195 already in existence, making Atlanta one of the largest international complexes in the United States.

The check in area is expansive, and the arrival area is easily navigated and give passengers the ability to keep their luggage (prior to this expansion – international travelers had to recheck their luggage after customs).

GEP Atlanta will be running arrival and departure shuttles out of the brand new space beginning tomorrow for travelers in town for the American Urological Association’s annual meeting.

Burger of the Week Club

GEP Destination Management is always proud of their team members’ pursuits, on and off the clock. With May being National Hamburger Month – we felt it was fitting to highlight Erin Kelley, Creative Services Manager in GEP Washington. Erin is the President and Founder of the Burger of the Week Club. Inspired by her passion for cooking and grilling, the Burger of the Week Club began in her hometown of Avalon, NJ in 2009. Club meetings are held once a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Each week has a theme with a corresponding menu from the burger, to the side and the beverage. With a new initiative called Grilling for Good, the Burger of the Week Club will expand to the Washington, DC area in Summer 2012 with many of the proceeds going toward the Lupus Foundation of America.

The Atlanta Food and Wine Festival kicks off today! Running May 10 – 13th, the Festival offers a unique experience in the heart of Midtown. Attend a lesson from some of the greatest culinary masters in the south, enjoy a dish from some of your local favorites or indulge in a new cocktail from an area Mixologist.

GEP Atlanta was excited to host a few very happy clients at a home Atlanta Brave’s baseball game at Turner Field. The group utilized one of Turner’s many luxury suites, complete with delicious food and drinks, and TV’s for a different “view” of the game. The group had such a good time, they even stayed for the Friday Night Fireworks after the Braves victory!

Maximizing Your Transportation Budget

In April we polled our Destinations Download readers to see how much of their average meeting’s budget was dedicated to transportation. An overwhelming majority indicated 0 – 20% of their average meeting budget was earmarked for transfers.

With such tight budgets, here are our recommendations to get the most bang for your buck in the world of transportation.

Managed Manifests:

If you are offering arrival and departure services to your guests, set guidelines for your attendees. Offer a smaller window – between 4 – 6 hours – for services to keep costs low. Guests who do not abide by the guidelines will not receive a complimentary transfer. Also, consider grouping guests by flight to save money on vehicle costs.

Shuttle Services:

Instead of offering individual transfers based on flight times, offer to run a shuttle. Shuttles can depart as frequently as you’d like and offer a lower cost per person rate than individual trips.

Utilize a Local Expert:

When planning your dine arounds or other off property functions, utilize a local expert (such as a DMC) to minimize wait times in traffic, inside knowledge of the fasts routes, or general places to avoid at certain times (such as rush hour). GEP Destination Management can assist you finding restaurants with in a reasonable distance from your hotel and steer you clear of traffic nightmares which increase your costs by adding additional hours to the vehicle rental.

Cinco de Teambuilding

After donning sombreros and selecting a team captain, the Mexican Trivia Challenge takes place with the highest scoring teams getting the first whack at our Party Piñata.

Teams prepare Salsa, Guacamole and Margaritas, develop a team name, design a team logo and write a “chant” to market their creation – all within the allotted amount of time.

Teams will be judged on creativity, presentation and taste. All winning team members will receive medals for their culinary masterpieces. Olé!
